End of the Road?

It may take years for a karate-ka to earn a black belt.  For it is a long and arduous process that strains the body, stresses the emotions, and taxes the mind.  Rightly so if any meaningful change is to take place.  Our ultimate purpose is the forging of an indominatable spirit.  Such a spirit can accomplish anything.  This then is our goal.

Becoming a Black Belt takes work and dedication, which is the reason so few people ever earn one.  And of those who do?  Satisfied with what they mistakenly perceive as an accomplishment, many new Black Belts retire from training prematurely.  'Shodan' means 'Beginning Level', and it is at this point that students have learned just enough to be introduced to true Karate.  To discontinue training at this point would be like building a house without ever placing any of the furnishings, fixtures, or personal touches within it that make it a home.  So if you are the proud owner of a shiney new black belt, I ask you to consider your actions through the eyes of a Black Belt, and proceed wisely.
